| Canada needs great minds to build a better future.
Your Support of National Engineering Month will help.
Each year, National Engineering Month (NEM) gives Canadians of all ages the opportunity to explore, discover and appreciate how engineering, science and technology improve their lives.
In 2010, we supported over 100 events in dozens of Ontario communities. Over 30,000 children, teens and adults discovered their "inner engineer" and saw how engineering and technology contribute to society. Communications and media coverage delivered many positive messages about engineering and technology to a broad cross-section of Ontarians.
I’m writing today because I hope you will lend your support for National Engineering Month and demonstrate your commitment to our shared objectives.
What's New for NEM 2011
The 19th annual National Engineering Month (Week) will run from Saturday, February 26 to Sunday, March 6, 2011 with activities designed to:
- Raise awareness of the role engineering and technology play in our daily lives; and
- Encourage young people to consider a career in engineering or technology.
Locally organized activities, Globe & Mail editorial and a display poster will show how Ontario engineers, engineering technicians and technologists work to improve the quality of life for all of us … everyday … at home, at work and at play. With your support, we can once again sponsor the following:
1. Newspaper Supplement in The Globe and Mail
The 2011 Engineering Month Ontario supplement will be published in The Globe and Mail, Canada’s
most prestigious newspaper. This will be the eighth year of our partnership with The Globe and we want
to make the 2011 edition the most successful yet. This supplement will be delivered to the Globe’s
285,000 Ontario subscribers, representing an estimated total readership of over 640,000. Please click here to view NEM 2010
Globe and Mail Supplement.
2. Hands-on Family Activities in 4 Major Science Centres and Children’s Museums
Once again, we plan to offer the very popular K’NEX construction workshops at the Ontario Science
Centre in Toronto, Science North in Sudbury, the London Regional Children’s Museum, and the
Waterloo Regional Children’s Museum. In 2010, over 5,000 enthusiastic kids and parents participated in
these workshops!
3. Community Activities Focusing on Youth
We plan to offer a wide range of activities combining hands-on experiences with education for children
and teens across the province. NEWOSC supports more than 40 provincial Engineering Month events by
providing partial funding to volunteer organizers and supplying complimentary NEM promotional items.
Activities include a variety of competitions ranging from bridge-building, egg-tossing, robotics to
electromagnetic fishing activities and engineering design.
4. Engineers Without Borders “Water for the World” Workshop
In 2011, we plan to expand our Engineers Without Borders (EWB) presentations at Toronto Public Libraries across the GTA, including more visits to “youth-at-risk” areas. We also plan to expand a pilot
project launched in 2010 with the Mississauga Central Library to deliver EWB workshop to the Girl Guides. Engineers Without Borders helps people in developing communities gain access to technologies
that improve their lives.
5. Volunteerism
Volunteers have played a critical role in NEM since 1992. Volunteers help support and deliver NEM
activities throughout the province. NEWOSC is dedicated to maintaining a strong sustainable relationship
with our volunteers and building a dynamic active community by engaging more volunteers in our
programs.
