How to Become
a Certified Engineering Technician or Technologist in Ontario
More than 21,000 engineering/applied science technologists and
technicians
in Ontario belong to OACETT and another 27,000 in the rest of Canada
belong
to a provincial technology association. All are dedicated to excellence
in the engineering and applied science technology profession in
a manner
that serves and protects the public interest.
Education
Certified technicians (C.Tech.); certified engineering technologists
(C.E.T.) and applied science technologists (A.Sc.T.) have a
diploma from a Canadian engineering or applied science technician
or technology
program at a post-secondary educational institute; or have
passed advanced courses; or have earned certificates recognized
by the
Institute of Engineering Technology of Ontario (IETO), OACETT’s
registration board.
Work Experience
OACETT will review candidates’ résumés,
job descriptions and references to ensure that they can apply
the principles
of engineering or applied science technology to tasks required
on-the-job. Applicants for certification must have a minimum
of two years of experience in their engineering/applied science
technology
discipline. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a facility
with the working language and a facility with Canadian codes,
regulations
and practices in their discipline of registration.
Professional Practice Exam
Candidates must write and pass OACETT’s Professional Practice
Exam. Writing the 3½-hour exam enables members to meet
the high professional standards set by the association in the
area
of ethics and responsibility to the public.
Technology Report
Candidates for engineering technologist certification (C.E.T.)
must write a Technology Report. The Technology Report demonstrates
a candidate’s ability to effectively examine and describe
in detail an engineering or applied science problem.
