Engineering
Technicians and Technologists
Engineering technicians and technologists are vital members of
the engineering team, which also includes trades people, engineers
and scientists. The engineering techs contribute practical expertise
and sound theoretical knowledge and usually take care of the hands-on
aspect of a project.
Students entering engineering/applied science technology and technician
programs at a college, technical institute or university entertain
many career options. Engineering technology and technician graduates
enter careers in chemical, civil, electrical, electronics, environmental,
industrial and mechanical engineering. Graduates from an applied
science program work in aerospace, biological sciences, biomedical,
computers, environmental, geotechnical, instrumentation, mineral
resources/metallurgy, nuclear, survey/geomatics and telecommunications.
Engineering/applied science technicians and technologists choose
careers in project management, maintenance-engineering supervision,
quality analysis, testing and inspection, design, research, manufacturing
or high-tech electronics. Most positions are with the private sector,
government and utilities, although certified engineering technicians
and technologists also work as private consultants and in education.
OACETT — the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering
Technicians and Technologists — is the professional association
that certifies technology professionals. The association is dedicated
to excellence in the engineering and applied science technology
profession. OACETT does this through its certification program,
its work with colleges, employers and government.
Technicians and technologists qualify for certification by meeting
OACETT’s educational, work experience and testing requirements.
This entitles them to exclusive use of the association’s
officially recognized designations after their name: Certified
Technician (C.Tech.), Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T.), or
Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.)
